◀︎Return to Blog List An Open Letter to Santa Fe

On April 29 Homewise purchased 22 acres of empty land in South Meadows so that we can build Los Prados, a proposed new community with affordable homes and a functioning park that will feature play structures and other amenities for the residents of Santa Fe. Community and resident input helped to inform the design of this project. Homewise captured detailed community needs and preferences through hundreds of surveys, door to door conversations, and several neighborhood meetings.

The project has been in the works since May, 2021. Why did take us until April 29 to purchase the land? The Santa Fe Land Use Department and Planning Commission introduced repeated delays into the process. Despite these challenges, Homewise has moved forward with the purchase due to our deep commitment to improving access to affordable housing in Santa Fe.

We anticipate that the elected board of the City Council will soon help us make up for lost time and support our project so that we can start to build.

In an open letter, CEO Mike Loftin says, “When we first went under contract for the property in May 2021, the median sold home price in Santa Fe County was $505,000. 11 months later, the median sold home price has skyrocketed 25% to $631,000.”

He continues, “We refuse to sit by while the Planning Commission tries to stall or deliberately obstruct progress rather than help ease our city’s affordable housing crisis. We will continue to fight for what’s right for Santa Feans.”
