Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Previously it was a day of observance known as “America’s second Independence Day” by many African Americans since 1866. It signifies the end of slavery as it honors the anniversary of June 19, 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Confederacy’s loss to the Union Army with freed slaves. The historic day was two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and several months after the Union Army won the Civil War. It is now observed nationally with celebrations, cultural activities, and education.
