From Scared of Buying a House to Owning Her Dream Home

Abby was “avoiding buying a house because it was so scary.” She liked the idea of having a home of her own but felt intimated by all of the paperwork and responsibility of becoming a homeowner. Her Uncle told her that Homewise was a great place for first time homebuyers and when she looked into working with us, she found out about our free classes and financial coaching. “When I found out about the classes, it just took all of that worry away.”

Abby filled out an initial application and then got a call from Sarahi, a Homewise Home Purchase Advisor. She came into our office for an introductory meeting and found out she was pre-approved! Abby was excited at how smooth the process was, “everything was in one place and it was local.” She had gone to another lender who had trouble working with her multiple streams of income. Abby had been working three jobs for years until she got her current job working in Federal Grant Distribution for local non-profits.

After getting pre-approved, Abby began working with Jessica, her Homewise Realtor®. She was nervous about this part of the process but after Jessica told her that she didn’t work on commission, and she would take her to as many houses as she needed, she said that she felt “there was no pressure to buy a house.”

Abby toured a few houses, but there was one she had been eyeing long before she started the process. She had walked by a home in downtown Albuquerque in a neighborhood she loved and had been dreaming of living there. “Why didn’t you bring this up?” Jessica asked her. Abby had been unsure if she could afford the house, and the repairs it needed, but Jessica reassured her that Homewise could make it work, including helping her find homebuyer assistance that made the home fit into her budget. “I couldn’t have done it without that.”

When Abby approached the sellers of the home and told them about her interest, they were thrilled. They had been approached by other buyers looking to turn the home built in 1916 into an Airbnb or rental property and wanted to sell it to someone looking to repair the home to make it their own, like Abby. After working with contractors to get estimates on the repairs the house needed, Abby closed on her home and became a homeowner.

The previous owners sold the house with only partially completed renovations. Finishing and repairing the house was only possible with help from her old friends and family from the South Valley who pulled together to make her dream a reality. She said, “It felt better than I had imagined” to be in a home of her own and that “I felt like I could breathe for the first time in years.”

Abby has been hard at work ever since she moved in making her house feel like home. She has been painting the walls, setting up her garden, and cleaning out the shed to become an art studio. She is glad she came to Homewise to help her navigate the process of becoming a homeowner. “Anyone that wants to buy a house, I tell them to call Homewise!”

We can help you achieve your dreams of homeownership too!
