Hard Work Helps 21-Year-Old Turn Homeownership Dream Into Reality

For Luis, “owning a home was always the goal.” When he turned 18, he started working in order to save towards a down payment. With owning a home as his focus, he saved as much as possible. He doesn’t buy anything new unless the old one breaks, “my car is older than I am, and it still works!”
After 2 years in a part-time role working at Home Depot’s fulfillment center, he moved to a full-time position and decided to start the process of buying a home by meeting with one of our Home Purchase Advisors. Thanks to his diligent savings habits, Luis was pre-qualified and began the search for the home he had been working towards.
He had toured a few homes but wasn’t happy with the extent of repairs needed on many of the homes within his budget. That’s when Elena, his Homewise Realtor ®, told him about a Homewise Renovation Home that he might be interested in. The renovation program focuses on completing high-quality, energy efficient, and durable renovations to then sell the homes to low-to-moderate income clients, often providing down payment assistance that helps make the purchase more affordable.
When Luis saw the home, he knew it was the one he wanted to move forward with it. “That was honestly the best one that we saw, because it was actually done by Homewise” Luis said. His father and grandfather had both done contracting work for Homewise and both told him that they trusted the quality of Homewise projects.
Once he had decided on his home, he began working with our lending team to get a mortgage that was just right for him. “Jessica was very good,” Luis said, “and Marcos explained a lot of stuff to me and my dad when we got confused.” As a young first-time homebuyer, Luis said it was important to him to have this help to understand the finances of his loan. It was about a year from when Luis first came to Homewise to when he closed on his home at just 21 years old.
Luis is excited to move into his new home with his father, as well as his sister, who is in high school. “My sister is probably the most excited” Luis laughed. While he is nervous about the new responsibilities of homeownership, he is looking forward to exploring what it is like to own a home and happy to be moving on from renting.
To anyone who wants to buy a home, Luis says it takes dedication on the long road full of unpredictable turns, “but if you put your mind to it and you keep at it, it will happen.”
